Bridging the Gaps: Expanding Meal Delivery Through Data and Innovation

Summary:
In this customer story, CaseWorthy customer Jennifer Wescott shares how Meals on Wheels South Florida partnered with DoorDash’s Project DASH to fill volunteer gaps and expand meal delivery to seniors across Broward County, using ServTracker data to secure a second funding round, grow their delivery radius from 10 to 15 miles, and complete nearly 400 deliveries to previously unreached communities.

Founded in 1984, Meals on Wheels South Florida is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing hunger-relief programs and services for seniors throughout Broward County. Powered by the commitment of community volunteers, Meals on Wheels South Florida delivers nutritious meals, friendly visits, and safety checks—helping seniors maintain their independence and dignity while living healthier, more connected lives. Our comprehensive programs include home meal delivery, companion pet meals and grooming, grocery shopping assistance, nutrition education, Claris Companion tablets, and emergency meal services. Connecting with Project DASH: The Story Behind Our Involvement

We first learned about Project DASH in 2024 when Meals on Wheels America reached out and invited us to apply for a pilot partnership. At the time, we were looking for innovative ways to expand our home delivery services and better serve our community when volunteers were unavailable. The opportunity to collaborate with DoorDash through Project DASH was a perfect fit, allowing us to leverage their delivery network to reach more seniors in need. The success of our initial pilot not only helped us serve more clients but also led to a direct invitation from DoorDash in 2025 to participate in a second round of funding.

By staying connected with national partners and being open to new collaborations, we discovered how programs like Project DASH can make a real difference. I encourage other organizations to keep an eye out for similar opportunities—sometimes, all it takes is one invitation to spark a lasting impact!

About Project DASH

DoorDash’s Project DASH is a social impact initiative that partners with food banks, nonprofits, and programs like Meals on Wheels America to deliver meals and essential items directly to people facing food insecurity. Instead of relying solely on in-house staff or volunteers, local organizations can use DoorDash’s delivery network (“Dashers”) to transport meals from distribution sites to recipients’ homes, helping overcome barriers like transportation, mobility, or distance.

For Meals on Wheels chapters like ours, Project DASH acts as a flexible backup system: when volunteer drivers are on vacation, sick, or otherwise unavailable, Dashers can step in to ensure seniors still receive their meals without interruption. This helps programs maintain consistent service and expand delivery capacity without needing to recruit additional volunteers.

Amplifying our Impact

In community-based programs, the difference between maintaining services and truly expanding impact often comes down to one thing: insight. Recently, I had the opportunity to dive deeper into our service data using our ServTracker application, specifically analyzing the delivery volume and client impact reports. What began as a routine grant application task quickly evolved into a powerful story—one that not only demonstrates our program’s effectiveness but also helps chart a path forward for growth and sustainability.

What began as a routine grant application task quickly evolved into a powerful story—one that not only demonstrates our program’s effectiveness but also helps chart a path forward for growth and sustainability.

Our primary goal in reviewing these reports was to better understand how many of our clients received meal deliveries through a previous Project DASH grant from DoorDash. This grant had been instrumental in helping us maintain continuity of service during times when our traditional volunteer network faced limitations. As anyone involved in a Meals on Wheels program knows, volunteers are the backbone of our operations, but they are also human. They take vacations, they get sick, and sometimes life simply makes them unavailable.

That’s Where the Project DASH Initiative Came In

By leveraging DoorDash’s delivery infrastructure, we were able to fill critical gaps in our service coverage. The data pulled from ServTracker gave us a clear picture of just how impactful this partnership had been and allowed us to use this data to apply for a second round of funding through Project DASH. The delivery volume report provided a detailed breakdown of delivery counts, while the client impact report helped us identify unique clients served through the grant. Together, these reports painted a compelling narrative: when traditional systems are supplemented with innovative solutions, we can reach more people, more reliably.

As I worked through the data, several key themes began to emerge. First, there was a clear correlation between volunteer shortages and increased reliance on grant-supported deliveries. This confirmed what we had observed anecdotally—during peak vacation seasons and holidays, our need for supplemental delivery services spikes significantly.

Second, the reports highlighted geographic patterns in service delivery. Many of the clients who benefited from the Project DASH grant were located at the outer edges of our standard delivery radius. This observation sparked an important question: what if we could expand that radius?

Historically, our Project DASH grant-funded program has operated within a 10-mile delivery zone. This limitation has been necessary to ensure timely and efficient service, especially when relying on volunteers. However, the success of the DoorDash-supported deliveries suggested that we might be able to extend our reach without compromising quality.

Bridging the Gaps: Expanding Meal Delivery Through Data and Innovation

This Realization Became a Cornerstone of our Second-round Grant Application

In preparing our proposal, we wanted to do more than simply request additional funding—we wanted to demonstrate a clear, data-driven vision for growth. Using insights from these delivery and client impact reports, we outlined a plan to expand our delivery radius from 10 miles to 15 miles. This seemingly minor change had the potential to make a significant impact.

By extending our reach, we were able to utilize DoorDash to serve communities farther south, areas that have historically been beyond our operational DoorDash boundaries. Locations such as Hollywood, Hallandale Beach, and Miramar represent pockets far from our administrative office, where the need for volunteers is just as urgent, if not more so. Thanks to Project DASH, expanding our radius allowed us to complete nearly 400 deliveries during the grant period.

~400 Deliveries Completed During Grant Period

Another important aspect of our grant application was demonstrating efficiency. Funders want to know that their investment will be used effectively, and the ServTracker reports allowed us to do just that. By showing exactly how many clients were served, how often deliveries occurred, and where those deliveries were concentrated, we were able to provide a level of transparency and accountability that strengthens our case.

But Beyond the Numbers, There’s a Human Story Here

Each data point in those reports represents an individual—a senior neighbor who relies on our program not just for nutrition, but for connection, stability, and peace of mind. Expanding our DoorDash delivery radius isn’t just about reaching new ZIP codes; it’s about reaching people who might otherwise go without.

It’s about a senior living alone who no longer has the ability to cook. It’s about the individual recovering from illness who needs consistent support. It’s about ensuring that geography is not a barrier to care.

Looking back, what stands out most about this process is the power of data to drive meaningful change. The ServTracker reports were not just administrative tools—they were catalysts. They helped us see where we’ve been, understand where we are, and imagine where we can go next.

The ServTracker delivery volume report provided a summary of all DoorDash-supported deliveries completed during the grant period, making it easy to show exactly how many meals reached our community through Project DASH. The ServTracker client impact report, on the other hand, detailed the number of unique clients who received these deliveries, helping us demonstrate the breadth of our impact and how many seniors benefited from the program.

And that’s ultimately what this work is about: continuous improvement in service of our senior community.

Whether through volunteers, innovative partnerships, or a combination of both, we will continue to find ways to deliver not just meals, but care, dignity, and connection to those who need it most.

We are proud to partner with CaseWorthy to provide data-driven reports for our grant funders, applications, and internal decision-making that strengthen our programs every day. In the end, bridging our volunteer gaps isn’t just a logistical challenge-it’s a promise. And with the right tools, partnerships, and vision, it’s a promise we are proud to keep.
