CA to Issue $68 Million to Combat Homelessness

Homelessness in California

Affordable housing is key in the fight against homelessness. In a recent announcement from California Governor Gavin Newsom, 231 new housing units will be built through Homekey, a part of California’s Department of Housing & Community Development (HCD). The cities and counties currently awarded funds for these locations include Placer, Santa Clara, Orange, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, and Modesto.

According to Homekey’s website, round 1 in 2021 housed 8264 individuals and created 5911 new units. The additional funds from last week’s announcement make the amount budgeted for round 2 just under $1 billion and plan to create over 3400 housing units in total.

What does this mean for HMIS organizations?

Information is everything – it’s about quality AND quantity in today’s day and age. You need a system in place that let you collect and report on criteria no one else is utilizing. This differentiates your organization from the flock and makes you more likely to land funding like this in your backyard rather than in your neighbor’s.
